Moment of clarity: Charlie Sheen seemed to realised the error of his ways after his comedy roasting last night
A comedy roasting is not the place you expect to see a humiliated star have a moment of clarity.
But controversial Charlie Sheen, 46, revealed it was the love of his family that made him realize he has to change his ways on TV last night.
After some comedy payback to his tormentors on 'The Roasting Of Charlie Sheen' he gave a touching monologue that seemed to signal he is ready to get back on the straight-and-narrow.
The Two And A Half Men star seemed to be starting another comedy skit when he said: 'I did porn stars, I did drugs, I had my own TV show and then I did what all the people in America wish they could do - I told my boss to f*** off.'
'Then it was gone, in one fiery public flame out.
'And it was only when the smoke cleared, I realized just how lucky I am.'
Hilarious: While Charlie got sentimental on tonight's show there was still plenty of humor
'Even after all that I still have a family that loves me.'
He then joked about the reason they were not attending his ritual humiliation, which was screening on the night his old starring vehicle Two and a Half Men was starting a new series with new lead Ashton Kutcher.
He added: 'They have seen me in jail, they have seen me rushed to emergency rooms, they've seen me dragged to court., but seeing me on basic cable would kill them.'
Ovation: Charlie received stirring applause when he finally delivered his own speech
And he promised to change his ways for good.
He said: 'I am done with winning because I have already won.
'This roast may be over, but I'm Charlie Sheen. In here burns an internal fire.
'I just have to remember to keep it away from a crack pipe.'
Having a laugh: Charlie lapped up the insults as he sat in his throne
Special guest: Former Guns 'n' Roses star Slash thrashed away at the guitar as Charlie sat onstage
The show started in a more robust manner though, and from when Charlie emerged sitting on a train with ex-Guns 'n' Roses guitarist Slash miming a guitar solo, he was dealt some rough justice.
No doubt eyebrows will be raised however by a controversial joke made by host Seth MacFarlane that mocked Amy Winehouse's death.
The Family Guy creator said: 'We all know there’s a good chance Charlie will be dead soon so I wrote an obituary.
Controversial: Seth MacFarlane cracked a eyebrow-raising joke about Amy Winehouse at the start of the show
'Charlie Sheen, who became a tabloid fixture due to his problems with drugs and alcohol, was found dead in his apartment.
'Actually, you know what, I kind of actually just copied Amy Winehouse’s obituary.
'I only had to change three things, though: the sex of the deceased, the location of the body and the part that says, ‘a talent that will be missed.'
Shocking: The crowd could not believe some of what they were hearing during the high profile show
No hard feelings: Charlie gave the roasters a hug whenever they finished their section of stand-up despite being mocked
Just before that he had mocked the star, saying his death was bound to come sooner rather than later.
He said: 'Tonight on Two And A Half Men they’re actually having Charlie’s pretend funeral, believe it or not.
'No need to switch over though. Just wait a few months, you can probably see the real thing.'
Anthony Jeselnik also landed many of the more robust blows.
He said: 'I don't understand why you are not grateful for what you have right now.
Not such a jessie: Anthony Jeselnik did not hold back during his spot
Star spangled panel: Celebrities who turned up to poke fun at Sheen included William Shatner and Mike Tyson
'Don't do it': Iron Mike Tyson tried to warn Jackass star Steve O that running into his fist would be a bad idea
'I'm going in': The prankster could not be dissuaded and instructed him to hold out his arm
Ouch: Even Gaddafi was shocked at the impact when the Jackass star jumped onto Tyson's fist
