The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge joined sailors on a Canadian warship for a church service today.

The royal couple were included in prayers during the inter-denominational event held in their honour on the deck of HMCS Montreal.

William and Kate had spent the night on the frigate as it sailed along the St Lawrence River from Montreal to Quebec City - the next stop on their tour of the Commonwealth country.

The couple slept in the quarters of the warship's head officer Commander Real Brisson - something that is traditionally done when VIPs come aboard.

The room was probably one of the smallest the couple have stayed in but space is at a premium on a fighting warship.

When they first boarded last night after a busy day in Montreal they joined the senior officer on his bridge and also met other members of the ship's company.

This morning they sat down to breakfast with officers in the mess and were probably treated to some of the best food the cooks had to offer.

Their visit was praised by Dennis Drainville, the Anglican Bishop of Quebec, one of a number of senior clergy who were part of the service.

He said: 'The significance (of today) for me and for many Anglicans is very simple. We have a long association with the monarchy.

'William will someday by King and because of that his opportunity to come here and be among people - Canadians - and learn about Canada is very important, we are diverse.'

He added: 'Her Majesty the Queen is one of the most faithful individuals, every year she gives in her message an indication of the Christian values and virtues that are so important to us. William being her grandson I'm sure will carry on that tradition.'

The service held was led by Brigadier-General Karl McLean, Chaplain General of the Canadian Forces, and it echoed across Quebec's Queen's wharf.

When prayers were said for leading figures like the Queen and Prime Minister Stephen Harper, the Duke and Duchess were also mentioned by the senior cleric.

Kate looked stylish in an electric blue Jacquenta dress, by Erdem, the Canadian-born British designer who also designed the navy-blue lace dress that she wore on her arrival into Ottawa on Thursday.

Today's shift gown had a floral lace applique across the shoulders and sleeves and a split skirt.

She accessorised the outfit with beige patent platform stilettos and a matching beige mock-croc clutch bag.

During the service hymns included 'Eternal Father, Strong to Save' and 'Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer.'

The couple also sang along in French to the hymn 'Je Louerai L'Eternel,' (Praise, I will Praise You Lord).

The congregation were accompanied by a five-piece brass quintet, from the Band of the Royal 22nd Regiment, whom the Duchess congratulated at the close of the service telling them 'Really well played'.

After the service the royal couple were piped off the warship as the ships company stood along the edge of every deck and landing.

As they came down the gang-plank a voice called out, from amongst the several hundred who had gathered by the wharf's gates, 'We love you Kate'.

The sailors and their officers then removed their hats and gave three cheers for the couple as they greeted a line of dignitaries waiting on the wharfside.

Among them was Konrad Sioui, Grand Chief of the Council of the Huron-Wendat nation.

Wearing a colourful hat the First Nations leader gave the Duke a copy of a treaty signed between his people and the British in 1760.

He said: 'I welcomed the Duke and Duchess to Huron land. She wanted to find out about my hat and what it was made from - it's wild turkey and eagle feathers and is made by the women.

'It is the same hat worn in 1760 when the then grand chief made the treaty.'

As the couple made their way into town police were out in force in down town Quebec City.

More than 150 protesters, some wearing black and waving flags, demonstrated about two blocks from City Hall, where Prince William was due to make remarks before visiting a homeless shelter.

A far larger crowd of supporters, chanting 'Will and Kate.' were allowed closer to City Hall and greeted the royal motorcade with loud cheers when it arrived.

The protesters chanted 'RRQ,' the initials of the anti-monarchist, separatist group, Reseau de Resistance du Quebecois, or Quebecker Resistance Network, which organized the protests in Montreal and Quebec City.

Police set up barriers to keep the protesters away from City Hall, but the demonstrators brought a pickup truck with audio equipment and speakers so their chants could be heard.

They carried signs reading 'Pay your own way' and 'The monarchy, it's over.'

The royal couple met Pierre, a 24-year-old circus skills student, wowed the royal couple by juggling with cigar boxes during their visit to the homeless shelter Maison Dauphine.

The Duke described the juggling as 'awesome' and spent several minutes deep in conversation with Pierre afterwards, asking him how long he had been learning his tricks.

Pierre, who, like all of the youths at the centre, prefers to be known only by his first name, admitted he was not a huge monarchist before he met the couple.

With his green dreadlocks, nose ring, inch-wide holes in his ears, tattoos and a 'Ska is Death' T-shirt, he didn’t look much like one either.

He said: ‘I’m not really a big royalist, but it’s special to meet them, a privilege.’

Pierre, who has been visiting the Jesuit-run centre for seven years, was living on the streets before the centre helped him find a home and complete his education.

After he had shown off his skills to the Duke and Duchess, the Duke joked: ‘I hope you’re not going to say it’s our turn now.’

Vocal yet vastly outnumbered protesters failed to cause any disruption to the royal couple's events in Montreal on Saturday, other than aggravating some of the pair's supporters.

About 35 protesters, including members of the Quebecker Resistance Network, stood outside Sainte-Justine University Hospital Centre in Montreal. They were outnumbered about 10 to one by William and Kate supporters gathered outside the children's hospital where the newlyweds visited cancer patients and the hospital's neonatal care facility.

Republicans also paid for a plane to fly overhead pulling a sign reading ‘Long Live Free Quebec’.

But the crowd greeted the Prince’s attempt to deliver his speech in French warmly while Kate also smiled proudly.

The Prince thanked Quebecers 'for your patience with my accent' and expressed the hope that 'we will have the chance to get to know each other over the years to come.'

After the ceremony, William and Kate, flanked by a security detail, greeted supporters and well-wishers, accepting flowers from a young girl and shaking hands.

The move broke with protocol, as there had been no official walkabouts planned in Quebec because of security concerns.

Meanwhile, pro-sovereignty protesters had gathered near City Hall but were kept well away from the celebrations.

Police closed a lot of the side streets leading to City Hall, with some people not willing to clear the area where the royal motorcade was to arrive.

One person was taken into custody.

The visit to Quebec City rankles many sovereigntists because the couple plan to visit Citadelle, a fortified residence at the foot of the Plains of Abraham.

Appropriate attire? Lady Gaga headed to a yoga studio in Taiwan wearing a lace cat suit while holding her mat


We’re used to seeing Lady Gaga strutting around in whacky outfits on and off stage but you’d think she might change into something more appropriate for yoga.

Gaga didn’t seem to think that was necessary though and headed to a yoga studio in Taiwan dressed in a lace cat suit, her trademark chunky heels and scarlet red lipstick as she held onto her mat.

Her yoga class came the day before her concert, which will kick off tonight in Taipei as part of her five-day visit to the island.

But instead of being a relaxing day out for the Poker Face singer, she was surrounded by hundreds of fans as she left the building.

Her bodyguards had to clear the way for Gaga to get through but her ‘little monsters’ even gathered outside her hotel to try and catch a glimpse of of their idol.

The 25-year-old arrived in the country on Friday night by private jet and headed to the Regent Taipei hotel, where she has been staying.

Two fans camped outside the hotel all night to try and meet Gaga in person, while others dressed up as their idol to prepare for a ‘Lady Gaga Day’ fashion show today ahead of her concert tonight in Taichung.

Gaga was on her way to Greater Taichung, where a series of events will take place before her concert kicks off.

The city government is throwing a welcome party, for which thousands of fans are expected to show up.

Until now Prince William’s only culinary boast has been that he makes a mean shepherd’s pie.

After 40 minutes in a Canadian cookery school however, it was herb and cranberry-crusted lamb and croustillant a l’effiloche de canard confit – and a distinctly competitive attitude to his lobster soufflé.

The Prince and the Duchess of Cambridge, dressed in personalised chef's whites, were taking part in a cookery demonstration at Montreal’s top chef school, the Institut de tourisme et d’hotellerie du Quebec.

Although they were greeted by a noisy demonstration by Quebec separatists, the Prince did not let that distract from the main task in hand – proving that he was a better cook than his host, Quebec Premier Jean Charest.

Mr Charest produced the first soufflé of the lesson, which was brought forward for display with a flourish by the Duchess. Two minutes later the Prince brought his soufflé up, removed the

It was, he said, 'a soufflé-off'. And if that wasn’t painful enough, he turned to Mr Charest and rubbed it in with one of those Windsor puns that his father used to love: 'If you could rise to the challenge that would be great.'

A despondent Mr Charest, who in fact has a reputation as an accomplished cook, took a sad look at his rejected soufflé and said: 'Now I guess I will have to pack it up and bring it home.'

For the Prince, the demonstration was an opportunity for some light-hearted clowning about, pretending to pinch the strawberries from a bowl and insisting on dipping a spoon into a vat of melted chocolate for a taste. “Is there a time limit? Do we eat as we go? I’m quite hungry.'

The Duchess, however, seemed to take it all much more seriously. Student Theresa Rindress, 23, who showed her how to make an amuse-bouche of foie gras on a toasted brioche with apple cider jelly, said: 'I showed her how to hold the knife and position her hand so that she did not cut herself. She was fantastic. She was very competent with the knife.'

She added: 'I asked her if she liked to cook at home. She said she likes to cook, but does not do fancy things.

'She more makes big batches, throws a few ingredients together, trying new things. But that’s how chefs experiment, throwing things together and seeing if the flavours work.'

They have taken to every tradition and custom with gusto since their arrival in Canada on their official visit to the Commonwealth country. And today was no exception.

On day three of their visit, a tradition associated with royal tours to Canada going back decades was fulfilled by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - tree planting.

Following in the footsteps of a long line of royal couples, William and Kate shovelled earth on to tiny saplings as a living memento of their visit.

During the tree planting ceremony the Duke and Duchess brought joy and comfort to a cancer victim who was recently told he had only 12 weeks to live.

In scenes that brought back memories of the Duke's mother Diana, the royal newlyweds bent down to speak to wheelchair-bound Terry Joyce, 47, a former computer expert from Ottawa.

Terry struggled to his feet and leant against a walking frame as William, 29, arrived but the royal told him to sit down and relax.

When Kate arrived she shook him warmly by the hand and told him: 'Let's get you out of the sunlight Terry.'

After the couple left, Terry, who lives in the Bruyere Hospice, burst into tears and was comforted by his doctor.

He said: 'This has given me a tremendous lift. It goes to show that we have a wonderful monarchy and we really need people like this.

'I was told a week ago I would be meeting them and I have been looking forward to it ever since. It has been one of the best days of my life.'

During the ceremony the royal couple planted an Eastern Hemlock in the shadow of the Pin Oak planted by William's parents on June 21, 1983 - his first birthday.

William took a deep breath and looked deep in thought as he was shown the plaque bearing his late mother's name.

Later the couple met newlyweds who married on the same day as them - April 29 this year - as well as couples celebrating their 50th, 60th and even 70th wedding anniversaries.

Kate, smiled as Adrienne Charlebois, celebrating 50 years of marriage to her husband Denny, told the royal: 'I hope you will be as fortunate as we have been in our marriage.'

The royal couple looked at each other and replied: 'We hope so too.'

Later, Kate was treated to a curtsey by the three-year-old granddaughter of the Governor General, David Johnston.

Kate Johnston-Zemek has clearly been practising as she performed the elaborate manoeuvre in her pretty summer dress.

The native species planted by William and Kate will serve as an enduring symbol of the couple's love for 800 years.

Its position means that it is surrounded by red oaks planted by other members of the Royal Family including the Queen's which has grown to a great height since being planted in 1977.

More than 120 commemorative trees grace the grounds of Rideau Hall.

The tradition was first started by Japan's Prince Fushimi when he made the first official foreign royal visit to Ottawa in 1907.

The list of previous members of the monarchy who have turned gardener and used a spade to help set a young tree on its way stretches back more than 70 years.

William's great grandparents George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother took part in a tree planting ceremony during their tour of Canada in 1939.

A further 15 have been planted by royal hand with everyone from William's parents, the Prince and Princess of Wales, to his grandparents, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh, following the tradition.

They have all been established in the royal grove area in the grounds of Rideau Hall in Ottawa - the official residence of the Governor General, the Queen's representative in Canada.

The tree planting was a first for the Duchess but the Duke has performed the ceremony in New Zealand and Australia.

Fast becoming a fashion icon, Kate wore a grey Kensington dress by Catherine Walker as she helped plant the tree - one of the favourite designers of the Princess of Wales.

The Duchess's mother, Carole Middleton, wore a pale blue Catherine Walker suit dress to her daughter's glittering wedding in April.
