A day after the civil wedding that transformed one-time Olympic swimmer Charlene Wittstock into the Princess of Monaco, the South African and her prince, Albert II exchanged vows in the religious ceremony today.

The happy both couple both answered 'oui' (yes) to the Archbishop of Monaco, Bernard Barsi, who conducted the service in front of 850 guests.

Wearing an off-the-shoulder Armani dress, the new Princess Charlene on Monaco looked serene and beautiful as she wed Prince Albert in the courtyard of the Prince's Palace.

The palace said the stunning gown took Armani's team 2,500 hours to prepare, of which 700 hours was spent on the embroidery alone, using 'kilometres' of platinum-coated thread sewn into 130 metres of off-white silk.

The gown would have been heavy for the new Princess, as she would have had to carry the weight of 40,000 Swarovski crystals, 20,000 mother of pearl tear drops and 30,000 'stones in gold shades'.

The dress's crowning glory was the long train made from 20 metres of silk tulle, which took 100 hours to make.

The groom looked smart in a cream summer uniform of Monaco’s palace guards, with his sleeves embroidered with oak and olive leave.

Accompanying the bride was her maid-of-honour Donatella Knecht de Massy and seven young bridesmaids from around Monaco and neighbouring French districts wearing taffeta red and white outfits and straw hats.

During the service, the couple exchanged 18-carat white gold platinum rings by Cartier, with Princess Charlene laughing as she placed the ring on her husband's finger.

After the mass, the couple went to the nearby Sainte Devote Church to lay down her bridal bouquet in the tradition in honour of the Patroness of Monaco.

As the couple left the church, Princess Charlene was seen wiping away a tear as a choir sang.

The bride was given away by her father, Michael Wittstock, who wore a black and grey suit.

As guests made their way into the venue, photographers shouted at Czech supermodel Karolina Kurkova, dressed in a sober navy skirt suit, to strike a pose.

Celebrated French-born chef Alain Ducasse is preparing a multi-course dinner for 450 guests.

Ducasse, who like many in his tax bracket has taken Monegasque citizenship, is the first chef to earn three Michelin stars in three different cities, including three for his Louis XV restaurant in Monaco.

The couple was married in an intimate civil service on Friday inside the prince's palace.

Albert's sisters, Princesses Caroline and Stephanie, were among several dozen guests at Friday's ceremony, which was held in the palace's sumptuous throne room where the prince's father, the late Rainier III, wed Hollywood legend Grace Kelly in 1956.

The blonde beauty died in a car crash nearly 30 years ago, and this tiny principality on the Riviera has been without a princess ever since.

Known as a notorious ladies man, 53-year-old Albert long eschewed marriage, and many Monegasques had resigned themselves to forever having a bachelor prince.

The constitution was even modified to ensure the continuity of the Grimaldi line, one of Europe's oldest dynasties, in case Albert never produced an heir.

The prince acknowledged having fathered two children out of wedlock, but only his legitimate offspring would be able to succeed him. Rumours have swirled in recent days that a third illegitimate child had surfaced - prompting Charlene to allegedly try to call off the wedding and return to South Africa days before the festivities.

A former Olympic swimmer from South Africa was officially declared Princess Charlene of Monaco today following her marriage to Prince Albert.

Dressed in a sky-blue jacket and skirt, 33-year-old Charlene Wittstock smiled radiantly as she said ‘I do’ in a civil ceremony in the Royal Palace throne room of the ancient Mediterranean principality.

Her new husband, 53-year-old Albert, looked on proudly in a dark suit and grey tie as he put sensational rumours about his personal life behind him.

The French press even compared the nuptials to Britain’s Royal Wedding – while lamenting the fact that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had sadly had to decline their invitation to Monte Carlo because they were on an official trip to Canada.

Less respectful Gallic commentators were, meanwhile, suggesting that history’s first Princess Charlene might not have the same ring to it as Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

Miss Wittstock had, in the words of Le Monde, ‘tried to escape’ last week – back home to South Africa after learning that Albert may have fathered a third love child.

As the mystery deepened, Albert’s two love children and their mothers stayed away from today’s 40-minute ceremony at the Royal Palace.

They are also expected to be absent from the Catholic Church ceremony tomorrow.
Instead French President Nicolas Sarkozy is set to join celebrity guests including James Bond star Roger Moore, former supermodel Naomi Campbell, and veteran fashion designers Karl Lagerfeld and Giorgio Armani.

Princess Charlene today hit out at the rumours her wedding nearly fell apart over rumours of her husband's infidelity.

She told vogue.com: 'It is a shame that those rumours came at such a bad time, but I think they were timed to sabotage such a happy occasion.

'They are categorical lies. I won't dignify them with any response other than to say that the photographs of me and Albert in love and getting married will speak louder than any vicious gossip and empty rumours.'

The former swimmer compared her big day with competing in the pool and said it was no less challenging than diving into a freezing cold pool every morning as she trained for the Olympics.

And she talked about her wedding day outfit, a powder-blue corset, chiffon pleated palazzo pants and a powder blue jacket decorated with tiny silver and pearl buttons, which she designed with Karl Lagerfeld.

'It is my creation and I'm proud of it. It's feminine and keeps with tradition yet has a little twist that reflects my personal style.

'I thought it was a nice change to go for trousers instead of a skirt, especially since I'm an athlete and have always kept my clothes clean and simple.'

Organisers of the £55million celebrations surrounding the wedding – which included a concert by The Eagles last night – hope that it will rival the 1956 wedding of Albert’s mother, Hollywood star Grace Kelly, and his father, Prince Rainier.

Philippe Narmino, president of Monaco’s Council of State, officiated today, and confirmed that the former Miss Wittstock was now officially a Princess.

Before the 5pm ceremony, Mr Narmino said: ‘It’s the event of my life. Me, who as a magistrate, has dealt with hundreds of divorce dossiers during 27 years, will be marrying a couple for the first time.

Referring to the Paris news magazine which broke the story about Charlene’s attempted flight, and which still stands by it, Albert’s lawyer Thierry Lacoste said: ‘I heard everything about the child – white, black, who has been born, not yet born - it has to stop, it’s I don’t know what.’

He said: ‘There is no child, it’s a totally false rumour and absolutely without foundation. It’s easy to do your job as a journalist – to check that Charlene did not go to the airport. It’s clearly false, she and the prince were around all last week.’

In fact a senior detective from Monaco, who was involved in the later stages of the ‘incident’ at Nice airport, has confirmed that ‘Charlene had her passport confiscated so that the Prince’s entourage could persuade her to stay’.

Albert already has two children - six-year-old Alexandre, the son of Nicole Coste, a former Air France air hostess from Togo, and Jazmin, 19, whose mother is Tamara Rotola, an American estate agent.

Miss Coste was spotted in Monaco earlier this week, but was said to have been advised to stay away from the wedding to avoid ‘media exposure’.

Mr Lacoste infamously issued fierce denials before DNA tests proved Albert was the father of Alexandre and Tamara.

Despite his strong denial this time around, Mr Lacoste confirmed that he was taking no action against L’Express.

And Christophe Barbier, editor of L’Express and a close friend of French First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, said the magazine had no intention of removing the story from its website, saying: ‘We stand by our information which was supplied by three different sources.’

Mr Barbier said it was important to give Charlene’s attempted return home publicity because of the ‘number of crowned heads and representatives of various states that are expected at the marriage’.

Despite such enthusiastic predictions, the guest list for the wedding – which had been shrouded in secrecy until today - revealed that many senior royals who had been expected to attend were not in fact coming.

Miss Wittstock, who was born in Zimbabwe and moved to South Africa as a child, met Albert during a 2000 swimming competition in Monaco.

He has been an International Olympic Committee member since 1985 and competed in five Winter Olympics as part of Monaco's bobsled team.

Until now the name Charlene has been most commonly associated with Charlene Robinson, Kylie Minogue’s character in the Australian soap opera, Neighbours.

The idea of teaming her white Reiss dress with a red hat was a huge success and went down well with her Canadian hosts.

It proved the Duchess of Cambridge is fashion conscious and clearly considers each outfit before she deciding to wear it.

But it also shows she knows a little bit about history too as she wore a similar outfit to that of her husband's mother, Princess Diana - who would have been Kate's mother-in-law - when she visited Canada in 1983.

Both sported red hats with white dresses during their official visits but Princess Diana made a slightly bolder statement by wearing a matching red scarf.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge enjoyed a concert in Ottawa last night to round off a busy Canada Day.

Kate dazzled in a purple Issa Jersey dress as the Royal couple laughed and clapped while they watched acts from across the country joining 100,000 people on Parliament Hill.

They were the guests of honour at the event which was part of the national celebrations marking Canada's 144th birthday. Kate had changed her clothes from her earlier red and white outfit - Canada's national colours - into the purple dress, making it an impressive five outfits in 24 hours.

The five-year-old still had a spring in her step as she bounded out of a Miami hotel today to face the inclement weather.

The youngster was accompanied by her mother Katie Holmes, who reached for the umbrella as the pair stepped out.

They'd do well to get on a private jet and flee, with tropical thunder storms set to blight the city over the Independence Day holiday weekend.

Meanwhile, the temperatures in Los Angeles are positively balmy with nothing but sunshine forecast.

Katie, 32, and Suri are together at the seaside town in Florida where Tom Cruise, 48, is filming new movie Rock of Ages.

Earlier in the week Katie was back in Los Angeles, where she attended the premiere of her new movie Don't Be Afraid of the Dark.

Speaking to the LA Times, she said it had been 'a pleasure' working on the movie.

She said: 'This film has great characters and a great family drama happening outside of the scares, which only increase the scares.'

The superstar bought her signature fierce style to New York in a bright yellow crochet mini-dress and glittering gold stilettos, belting out a series of tracks from her new album '4'.

Midway through the set the singer emerged in an identical black version of the dress, which showed off her newly-svelte figure to perfection.

Beyonce admitted that she 'owns the word diva..but only if used in the right way' and told how she's recently enjoyed a travel break to appreciate 15 years of non-stop hard work.

'I really took time to get to know myself and I've learned how to appreciate everything I've worked hard for,' she said. It's hard to see when you're moving around so fast.

Asked how she manages to strut her stuff onstage wearing towering heels, she admitted that her fashion choices take their toll.

Movie star: Beyonce revealed she is starring in a remake of A Star Is Born, directed by Clint Eastwood


The scantily dressed star, who is sporting a bushy Tina Turner-style hairdo, finished off the concert with her smash hit Single Ladies.

During an interview with presenter Robin Roberts, she revealed she's starring in a remake of A Star Is Born, directed by Clint Eastwood.

'I can't believe it still,' she said. 'I'm so, so honoured that he believes in me. I can't wait to do this film.

'I represent this generation's talent and for me to be the chosen person as an African American woman is incredible.'

Roberts gushed how Beyonce empowers women. 'That's my message,' said Beyonce, who recently headlined Glastonbury.

'I try to write and sing songs that I think we as women need to hear.'

Now that's a beehive: Lady Gaga arrives with a two-tone black and blonde hairstyle as she arrives at Taipei International Airport in Taiwan last night


We're used to using the word 'beehive' to described a backcombed hairstyle.

But in Lady Gaga's case, her latest hairstyle looked like an actual beehive as she jetted into Taiwan yesterday.

There was no missing the flamboyant singer as she arrived in Taipei International Airport via private jet last night.

The Born This Way star was wearing a cone-shaped bun of black and blonde hair on top of her long wig.

But rather unusually for Gaga, her outfit looked rather demure than usual as she walked along in a monochrome dress and black tights.

After spending most of last week in Japan, the 25-year-old jetted to Taiwan on Friday night.

Despite her well-publicised arrival, Gaga managed to sneak into her suite at the Regent Taipei hotel, disappointing her fans waiting outside.

But after finding out how upset they were, she made an appearance at the window of her room on the 19th floor, to the delight of her devotees below.

The New Yorker is on her first ever trip to Taiwan, a five-day promotional tour for her new album Born This Way.

On Sunday, she is due to perform in Taichung City, where officials have named it 'Lady Gaga day' in honour of her first Taiwan visit.

Meanwhile, Gaga has been voted the Queen of Pop by Rolling Stone magazine.

The singer was voted over her female contemporaries because of her record sales, views on YouTube, social media mentions, critics reviews and revenue from live shows.

Coming behind her in second place was country singer Taylor Swift and Rihanna at three.

While the Duchess of Cambridge was causing a huge buzz on a royal visit to Canada, Pippa turned heads at Wimbledon when she descended on Centre Court again, this time to watch the men’s semi-finals.

Intriguingly, she wasn’t with her boyfriend Alex Loudon, who she took to SW19 on Wednesday. This time the 27-year-old was accompanied by former flame George Percy.

The ancient pile he will inherit, Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, is home to Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films, is known as the ‘Windsor of the North’ and the family are regarded locally in Border country as their royalty.
